Dual band refers to the radio frequencies which your mobile phone can operate on. The three international frequencies ranges or bands reserved for GSM are 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz. Dual Band phones generally use only the GSM 900MHz and 1800MHz frequency bands. In Australia, most GSM networks use the 900MHz frequency band although some networks are now using the 1800MHz frequency band also. If you mobile phone supports dual band, and if it is using a dual band network, it will automatically switch between 900MHz and 1800MHz frequencies without you even knowing - even while you are in the middle of a call!! Right now in Australia, to the majority of mobile phone users, having a dual band mobile phone really has little effect on service or quality. In the future, dual band functionality may mean that you may get better GSM coverage in some areas. For the GSM carrier, having dual band phones means that they can also simultaneously support more mobile phone conversations as they have more frequencies they can use. [ Back to Top ]
Tri band refers to the physical frequencies which your mobile phone can operate on. The three international frequencies ranges or bands reserved for GSM are 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz. Tri Band phones can use all three GSM frequency bands 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz. In Australia, as at the time of publication, most GSM networks still use only the 900MHz frequency band. Soon, GSM carriers will be upgrading their networks to support the 1800MHz band also. However, the 1900MHz band is only used in some parts of the United States and is unlikely to be used anywhere else in the world. If you mobile phone supports tri band, and if it is using a tri band network, it will automatically switch between 900MHz, 1800MHz or 1900MHz frequencies without you even knowing - even while you are in the middle of a call!! Right now in Australia, to the majority of mobile phone users, having a tri band mobile phone really has little effect on service or quality. In the future, dual band functionality (900MHz and 1800MHz) may mean that you may get better GSM coverage in some areas, however GSM carriers are unlikely to use the 1900MHZ frequency band in Australia. For the GSM carrier, having dual or tri band phones means that they can also simultaneously support more mobile phone conversations. [ Back to Top ]

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. The SIM card is a tiny memory chip card which has information stored on it. Your mobile phone reads the information in your SIM card when it connects to the mobile phone network and may also use it to save information such as your phone book. The network uses the SIM card to identify the user of a mobile phone and needs this information for billing purposes. Because the "identity" of the user is contained in the SIM card and not in the mobile phone, you can use the same SIM card in another mobile phone and retain the same mobile phone number. Often, SMS messages are also stored in the SIM card. [ Back to Top ]

SMS stands for Short Message Service. There are two types of sms messages.
